Taylor Swift Might Just Be A Genius

Writing this blog post violates every single one of my hipster tendencies. After all, I'm writing about one of the world's most popular artists just as she breaks into the pop(ular) music genre. What could be less hipster than that? But let's get one thing straight. I. Am. Not. A. Hipster. If I was, I would be immune to the pull of "Blank Space". But I'm not. I literally cannot stop listening to this song or watching this video. It already has over 54 million views on Youtube after being posted for...what? A week? Two tops? This video has shown us just how creative she can really be, coming up with the idea herself and really committing to the full on crazy. It's an incredible work of art, and I hate myself for saying this but she might really have a shot in the acting business. And those lyrics. They just blow me away. The story they tell, the surprisingly accurate way they capture young love despite this entire enterprise being a jab at those who think she actually is like this. It's incredible how there can be so much truth and humor at the same time. I am beyond obsessed with this song. And it's squashing even the strongest of my hipster tendencies, the ones that make me not want to see or like Big Hero 6 can't stand up to T-Swift's songwriting. Crazy.

But when you think about it, what's not to like about Taylor Swift? She's talented, gorgeous, and actually a pretty darn good role model for young girls. Sure there's all that boyfriend drama, but in the past year or so she's tried to put that behind her. So she's a serial dater. It's not like she's the only one. It's only because she's high profile that anyone even gives a shit. And compared to Lindsay Lohan's rehab habits or Miley Cyrus' twerking, I'm thinking a little boy drama isn't really that big of a deal.

Not to mention her songs are catchy as hell. I wouldn't say I'm a superfan because to be honest, I haven't listened to most of her songs. But the big ones, you can bet I know all the lyrics. Lyrics. That's another thing that makes Swift so unique. She writes her own lyrics. And not only does she write her own songs, but she somehow gets her fans to pay attention to whatever she's saying. In this day and age, when song lyrics seem to be fall by the wayside, it's nice to see people actually care. Even if it's because they're trying to decipher the hidden message and figure out which guy the song is about. It's a start.

I know, I know. Some of her lyrics are repetitive. But that only adds to the catchiness! How can you possibly forget "trouble trouble trouble" or "never ever ever" or "hate hate hate". Three times repeated just means it sticks in your head better. In spite of the repetition, somehow Swift's lyrics still mean something. The earlier songs told stories. The later ones catch moments. Whether it's a "22"nd birthday celebration (a personal favorite of mine that is quite relevant, though perhaps not as relevant as Greg James' version) or a message of support to everyone in the world that is different, telling them it's ok to be themselves and that there will always be haters. And who better to take that kind of advice from than Swift herself. I'm sure she knows a thing or two about haters.

Then there are the videos. Fun, quirky, heartwarming, hilarious, and beautifully filmed. "Love Story" fulfilled every girl's princess fantasy. "You Below With Me" hit right at home for those girls-next-door. And "Shake It Off" was an empowering video (as mentioned above) to help everyone embrace themselves as they are. The best part is, Swift's not afraid to make fun of herself either. She's dancing right there along with the rest of us.

So screw all the haters and pass me that Swiftamine. Because I think it's time to finally come out of the closet about this. Taylor Swift, I guess you can call me a fan.
