A Resolution to Not Make New Year's Resolutions

It's happened again. Another year has come and passed, and we find ourselves staring out at the blank slate that is 2016. This is the time of the year to reflect on our pasts and look into the future. To resolve to be better people and do better things. Of course by March, no one will even remember what they resolved to do on January 1st 2016.

So I say fuck it. Fuck New Year's resolutions. Fuck the tradition that we only think about how to be better versions of ourselves every time the ball drops in Times Square. At the end of the day, New Year's Day is really just that. Another day. And when it comes to self improvement, we should always be thinking of ways to grow. Change takes time. It doesn't happen instantaneously overnight because you decided drunkenly that you wanted to exercise more next year. It's something that you have to actively pursue and act on. Not just think it once and hope it'll happen.

So for this New Year, I want to try something different. This year I resolve to not make New Year's resolutions, but to make life resolutions whenever I decide to. This year I resolve to remember that any time of the year is a good time to better myself. That growing up takes active, continuous effort over a long period of time. But while I continue to work on becoming the best version of myself I can possibly be, I want to also remember to enjoy each moment and each experience as it comes, and each person who crosses my path then waltzes out of my world because ultimately, that is all life really is.
