Lobby Baby

Sometimes I forget how funny and talented Seth Meyers is. Obviously I appreciate getting my news from him on a weekly basis, but delivering punchlines about headlines is very different from a one hour stand-up routine, which is what Mr. Meyers subjects us to in Lobby Baby.

It is jarring, as Seth himself points out, to see him out of context of his news desk. I didn't even know he did things standing ;) But notwithstanding that, his most recent Netflix special is a delight, performed and filmed in my home town of Minneapolis (the more excitingly named twin of course)!

The hour long episode covers a range of topics from his wife's food poisoning the night before their wedding to being Jew-ish to the arrival of the titular Lobby Baby and the consequences of the aftermath (sorry Kevin) to #parenthood. Of course, it wouldn't be a Seth Meyers special if he didn't bring up Trump, the man who has provided him with so much content for Late Night for the past 3 years. I have been so impressed by how the comedians have kept his presidency from becoming a normalcy all this time. It's incredible to think it was that long ago so I have to applaud Mr. Meyers and his comrades for never letting Trump's presidency seem ok. But Seth's special added a...for lack of a better word..."special" touch for those who were tired of the jokes. He allowed them to skip it thanks to Netflix's technology, and for those who did, they came back to him declaring “So I guess my point is, I misjudged him, and I do think he’s a very good president. And hopefully, based on how I laid it out, you agree with me too.” What a tease.

This show is as much about his wife as it is him. In some ways she's almost the star of his show, which makes you think she must be the star of his life. Most comedians draw on their own experiences for content, often making fun of themselves as much as they make fun of society, but Seth tells it to us from a very different perspective: through the eyes of his wife. I haven't seen a lot of standup but for me it was creative and refreshing take on the self-deprecating humor. There's even a nice closing thread about a pedophile joke, Minneapolis, and yoghurt where he ties everything back together, and although I saw the final phrase coming from a mile away, it didn't make it any less satisfying on delivery. That is good storytelling, even when you know how it is going to end, it still brings you joy. And that is exactly what Lobby Baby is: a bundle of joy.
