Saturday Night Live Goodbyes
Originally posted May 22nd, 2013
Last Saturday night we said farewell to series
regulars Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisted. Although I wasn't
too excited about watching the Ben Affleck/Kanye West episode
(especially since there had been much better hosts and musical guests in
the past few weeks), I knew that I couldn't miss this one. Especially
since it would be the last for a few of my SNL favorites.
And
boy did this last episode deliver. Fred Armisted reprised his recurring
character of Ian Rubbish (a treat that we also got to see in Vampire
Weekend's Amex Unstaged videos courtesy of Steve Buschemi). The final
song not only completely outdid Kanye's performances but also offered a
bittersweet farewell to the very talented comedian. At the very end of
the episode when everyone was saying their goodbyes and hugging, you
could see that there were multiple tears shed by all the cast members.
We
also got to witness what was probably one of the greatest Weekend
Updates I've seen in a while. With a Really!?! segment hosted by Seth
Meyers and Amy Poehler, I forget just how great Seth delivers his
one-liners in Weekend Update. The timing is spot on and the jokes are
always funny. How else do you expect me to get my current events in? SNL
is losing a terrific head writer in Meyers, but I'm sure they'll manage
to pull through. You can bet I'll be watching Late Night now that he
will be hosting.
Then
there was the great epic moment between Seth and Stefon. Through the
years, Bill Hader has always been a favorite of mine. He is spectacular
with impressions and his Stefon character has always been great,
especially since he can't seem to keep it together. I especially enjoyed
the flashbacks of Stefon's time on Weekend Update. It kind of makes you
feel nostalgic. I love it when shows take the time to look back on all
that has passed when doing a farewell episode. But this ending was just
one that could not be beat. Bill Hader, we will miss you very dearly.
